Artist Statement
Growing up in New York State, near the Hudson River with it's New York Central Railroad Hudson Line, I always admired it, and I always try to capture it. Sometimes, I will just see a view; Then I have the need to paint it. Sometimes I'll sketch it or photograph it. Recently, I took an additional interest further north along the Hudson River, but within New York State. The Adirondacks are where the Hudson starts, and this area will be another treasure trove of beauty that I also plan to paint. In all, I believe that New York State is the best state to paint in. Even, winter offers inspiration: a ship in mid-January slogging through ice (some seamen contend that the
Biography: Kent Patterson Born 1955, graduated Dobbs Ferry High School in 1973, Bachelor of Science in 1988 from SUNY Empire State College, with previous studies at Pace University. And more recently since graduating, I have several four art classes at Westchester Community College's Art Workshop. DAY JOB: 1973-2011 My day job was a thirty six year carreer in the railroad industry, first starting with Penn Central in 1973, then Conrail, and MTA-Metro North railroad, mostly in operations. I started as a Tower Operator, the Yardmaster, Trainmaster, and finally a project manager. The work was operations management, planning, scheduling, and project management work. I retired 7/1/11.
ART WORK: I started drawing before I can remember, then switching to painting in my teens. Actually, I drew in school during art-class, as during well math and English classes - just ask those teachers.
THE TEACHERS & SCHOOLS: Aside from being implored to "return to my schoolwork", teachers encouraged me as far as I can remember.
PUBLIC SCHOOL & HIGH SCHOOL In first grade, Miss Lombardi encouraged my drawing. In the fifth grade, Mr. John Palmieri (who was really teaching all subjects - He liked history & science much), always said; "show-motion" when doing my transportation related artwork - I still hear him saying that, and heeding it too.
In later grade school, I tried my first oils, and thought they were totally cool. Later, in high school, I used oils and acrylics as much as possible. I took numerous classes with Mrs. Sonz at Dobbs Ferry High, and studied under DFH's Mrs. Keller our other art-teacher. As a senior, instead of study-hall, I took extra art classes just to keep painting, and stay out of boring study hall.
COLLEGE In college, I majored in business, but managed to take a painting class (Prof. Mulgrew, Pace), and several photography classes at SUNY Purchase (Prof. Bill Suttle). During those years, art took a secondary role leading to my 1988 BS degree at Empire State College. Also, I painted little from 1978 through 2004, doing roughly three pieces.
MORE CLASSES Upon returning to painting, I took classes, this time with a greater thirst. Three painting classes with Professor Ed Burke, plus a drawing class with Prof. Sarah Haviland, as well as a landscape class with Anne Johan. I will likely take additional studies over time.
Returning to Painting After a Hiatus: In 2004 I moved to Croton on Hudson NY, from
Alought I become a little attached to each oil painting, and do not always enjoy parting with a painting, at least there's the consolation that others will enjoy the work – “in a sense, it’s like cooking a fine meal for someone”; from basic ingredients (paints & materials) one can prepare something for others to enjoy.
